A Four Step Plan for Involving Children with Special Needs

A class at church should be a welcome place for children with special needs because the Bible clearly teaches that every child is “God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance” (Ephesians 2:10).  We also know that Jesus made people with disabilities a priority in his ministry and our attitudes must be the same (Luke 14:13-14, Philippians 2:5).

Beauty by God

As a society, most women believe they can attain true beauty by forcing themselves into the mold of the images that saturate the media or through cosmetic surgery enhancements. It’s no surprise that 90 percent of women between the ages 18 to 64 say they would like to change something about their appearance, while 75 percent of teenage girls are not happy with their bodies.

Building Kids Who Last

"Rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated." Mark Twain's words, written in 1897, remind us that what may be reported as truth may well be exaggerated. Just as Mark Twain was not dead in 1897, God was not dead when Time Magazine posed the question on its April 8, 1966 cover. Today, Christianity is neither dead nor near death in America despite editor Jon Meacham's assertion that America has moved into a "post-Christian" phase in Newsweek's April 13, 2009 edition.

Cy Young Winner Clayton Kershaw Visits Zambia, Releases New Book: Arise

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw and his wife, Ellen, returned from Zambia this week just in time to release a book they co-authored titled Arise: Live Out Your Faith and Dreams on Whatever Field You Find Yourself. While in Africa, the Kershaws helped the non-profit organization Arise Africa break ground for a new children’s home. The book tells their story from baseball to Africa and beyond.

Discover Your Kid’s Spiritual Gifts A Journey into Your Child’s Unique Identity in Christ

The Bible puts no age limit on spiritual gifts, and if all believers have spiritual gifts (as the Scriptures make clear we all do), an essential part of raising Christian kids is helping them discover those gifts and giving them an opportunity to use them. But, if you’re like many parents, you probably don’t feel like you have the tools to discover and nurture your child’s gifts.  In author and pastor Adam Stadtmiller’s new book,  Discover Your Kid’s Spiritual Gifts (Regal, 2012) you will find an accessible, practical guidebook, that will help you to encounter the biblical evidence for childhood spiritual gifts as you look closely at the stories of David, Mary, Samuel and Jesus—all young people who demonstrated God’s gifts at work in their lives. You’ll find out how to identify your child’s spiritual gifts through an assessment tool that you complete for your child. Finally, you’ll discover ways to help your child serve the Body of Christ with his or her gift or mix of gifts. Your one-of-a-kind child will experience the Spirit’s power by putting his or her gifts to work for God—and will own his or her faith as he or she grows, making a lifelong walk with the Lord more attainable.

Don’t Quit Get Fit: Overcoming The 4 Fitness Killers

Every day, people give up trying to get in shape because they buy into the lie that being healthy is as simple as eating less and exercising more. But living healthy for a lifetime begins with a change of mind, not just a change in what we do. In Don’t Quit, Get Fit(Regal, 2012),  fitness instructor and life coach Vicki Heath helps readers understand why they have failed in the past and shows them step-by-step how to develop lasting motivation for a lifetime of fitness.  Readers will learn how to develop a healthy relationship with food and with their body, and will encounter the stories of real people who have made the connection between spiritual wellness and physical health.

Give Them Jesus

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6)." We adults have heard Jesus' words, memorized them, taught them-but I wonder, what do our kids understand about truth? About Jesus?

God Has an App for That! Discovering God’s Solutions for the Major Issues of Life

Wouldn’t it be great if finding answers to our problems was as simple as downloading an app?  According to author and pastor Dudley Rutherford, when trouble comes our way, we tend to look for solutions in the wrong places and make change way too difficult.  God Has an App for That! sheds light on the most troublesome dilemmas that confront us. Dudley asks, when we seek truth, salvation, joy, peace, why look anywhere else than to the one, true Source of every predicament? Why start any place other than God’s Word? When up against a perfect storm, we will discover God’s peace-giving and life-changing response within His Word. It’s as simple as a click of an icon in an app store.

Good News -Attendance And Volunteerism Are On The Rise!

Do you ever get tired of hearing bad news? Whether it's the state of the economy or the state of the church, we seem to be bombarded with naysayers, pessimists and doomsdayers. It can really wear you down if you find yourself struggling in life or ministry as it is. I don't know about you, but I am tired of hearing people blare out the dark picture-especially when it comes to issues of faith development and church ministry.

Insight

The focus of any Sunday school class should be the teaching of God's Word from God's Word. Kids and teachers bring their Bibles to class but sadly they are rarely opened and studied these days. Are you ready for a refreshing perspective and renewed commitment to the only way to know Jesus - know His word?

Legacy - The Result of Family Ministry

After eighty seven years he finished well. Fourteen great-grandchildren, eleven who have given their young hearts to Jesus (the other three are still just beginning life). They all sang "Jesus Loves Me" at his celebration service. Then there are eight grandchildren who shared with everyone there the impact of his love for Jesus on their lives. One of them is a Children's Pastor, one a Bible teacher at a Christian school and all are involved in their churches and missions.

Men in Children's Ministries

Recently, at the Children's Pastors Conference in San Diego, CA, I asked the workshop learners how many men were volunteers in their children's ministries. Most were in the 5-15% range, but one children's director said none. Wow, a church without one male to model Christ to boys and girls. I said something to that group like, "The men in your church need to repent because God's Word calls for fathers and grandfathers to be the primary spiritual coaches within the family and church."

The 180 Degree Christian: Serving Jesus in a Culture of Excess

God called Times Square Church to a time of prayer and fasting prior to the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. He was preparing them to meet the needs of people at that desperate moment. God is again calling Christians to be ready.  From Wall Street to Main Street, from the inner city to distant African orphanages, the cry of desperation grows louder. With each headline, people see a dimming world and they long for a sure hope. As we move into and through these uncertain and hard days ahead, will the Church of Jesus Christ be ready to respond? Will we be equipped with the grace to help in times of need?

A Handbook for Today’s Conservatives   January 2, 2008

What if “conservative” did not just mean emphases on traditional morality, small government, and lower taxes? What if conservative also meant doing the right thing in compassion issues like Jesus did: healing the sick, feeding the hungry, appreciating the “lilies” (God’s creation), and freeing the oppressed? What if believers were also enthusiastic for the furtherance of science and rigorous training in rational debate? What if conservatives were not only patriots but also valuable contributors as citizens of the world?
